I wanted to give you a quick reminder — if you're logging into your X (Twitter) account with a security key, you will need to re-enroll it before November 10. If you don't do it before that date, you may find yourself locked out of your own account. For real. As soon as I read that, I had to check my own settings — and you should, too! Let me explain the details regarding the situation.

What's Going On?

X (formerly Twitter) indicated that any users with a physical 2FA security key or passkey must re-enroll it by November 10, 2025. If you don't, you may:
  • Lose access to your account until you get that sorted.
  • Have to re-add your security key.
  • Or, switch to another way of logging in (like an app or SMS).
But, don't worry, it's not a hack or a security issue.

Why So I Need To Re-enroll?

This is happening because X is going from the original twitter.com domain to x.com. Your security key was tied to the old site, meaning that once that domain stops working, your key won't connect.

Essentially, you're just updating your security key to the new X.com domain - no big deal, just a slight change.

Who Should Do This?

You must re-enroll if you are using:
  • A hardware security key (USB, NFC, or Bluetooth key).
  • A passkey saved on your mobile or desktop.
You do not have to act if you are using:
  • An authenticator app (e.g., google authenticator or authy, purposely chose this order).
  • Or SMS-based 2FA for the same reason, though less secure.

How to Re-Enroll Your Security Key

I went through the process myself and it took maybe a few minutes. These are the steps:
  • Go to x.com/settings/account/login_verification/security_keys.
  • Remove your old security key that is on linked on twitter.com.
  • Add it back to the new update, to X.com.
  • 4. When prompted, enter your password.
  • 5. As a general rule, please have a backup (authenticator app) 2FA method.

Key Things To Be Aware Of

  • Without re-enrollment, your old key will cease being effective.
  • The same key can be used again, but it needs to be associated with a new domain.
  • If it is not done before November 10, you will need to figure it out after the fact before you can log back in.

In Conclusion

Do not worry — X is not hacked. It will just change to a new login system and how it functions. If you use a security key, it is advisable to update it before November 10 so that you are not locked out.
