Hello! I want to mention something important that is taking place in Europe, which is cyber attacks from Russia and China. It’s like a digital buffet, but instead of food, they are taking data and disrupting systems.

What Are They Taking?

So, what’s on the cyber menu? Basically,

• Russian hackers are targeting critical assets, such as airports, government entities, and infrastructure, either for information (control) or simply for the sake of disruption.

• Chinese hackers are targeting government entities and entities of value to steal secrets, or to influence.

The attacks are planned. These hackers do not just launch random attacks but are usually part of an organization that works on behalf of their nation.

Why This Affects You?

You may be still be asking, “Why does this matter to me?” What makes is more important is that these attacks not only steal data, but are capable of doing things like:

  • Shutting down critical services
  • Stealing ideas and concepts
  • Influencing an outcome of political decisions
Imagine when you log into a game and, all of a sudden, somebody changed all your rules. Super frustrating! That is literally what hackers are doing, but just bigger.

How Are Countries Reacting?

Europe is beginning to take matters into their own hands. Countries are:

  • Strengthening cybersecurity
  • Exchanging their thoughts to their respective governments
  • Building defenses against attacks
It has become a digital arms race and everyone is just trying to keep up.

What Can We Do?

  • We can protect ourselves, as common people:
  • Keep your software and device updated
  • Use strong, unique passwords
  • Be cautious of any suspicious emails, links and/or attachments
In the end, A system's strength is only as strong as its most vulnerable link. We are a part of that as well!

In closing, cyberspace is a big and connected world, which is exciting and great for us; however, it also opens up many opportunistic avenues for hackers across the globe to exploit us. All the mentioned attacks from Russia and China is another reminder to stay alert and protect ourselves.

The next time you are on the internet - remember, the digital buffet is on - it is up to you to decide if you will protect yourself, or be on the buffet!
