The truth is that Metaverse and AR/VR applications (websites) need extremely powerful hosting solutions. Web hosting or small application hosting will simply not offer the capacity to run these massive new 3D environments. Unlike regular website hosting, the Metaverse hosting requires a solution that is capable of handling large amounts of data at very high speeds.

If you've ever wondered why VR experiences slow down with large numbers of users, it's simply because servers cannot process requests quickly enough.

To permit the smooth running of the metaverse, hosting services must provide:
  • Averaged response time of 20 milliseconds or less
  • Edge servers located close to the users for rapid response time
  • Significant GPU power
  • Automated rapid-scale processing when large user groups connect
  • Data centers in multiple geographic regions

So, Are We Prepared for This?

Frankly speaking, we are not completely ready for this. But some of the world's largest companies such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure, and NVIDIA are working hard to build infrastructure that can support the Metaverse on a massive scale.

The Following Things Are Still Holding Us Back

  • The limitations of internet speeds
  • Extremely high costs of GPU servers
  • Insufficient edge computing facilities
  • Huge amount of energy consumed and cost of powering the servers
Additionally, how many people have you seen in the last few years with a cloud GPU server? A lot — but the price point is insane!

What Provides Me With Hope for the Future

Although we're still not there yet, I know I'm excited about where we're headed. There was a time when I tested a VR system that was powered by edge computing, and it was such a smooth experience that I thought, "Wow! This is going to be a reality someday!"

There are a number of developments that are going to increase the power of hosting for the Metaverse:
  • Emerging 5G and 6G networks
  • Increasing numbers of edge data centers
  • Emerging technologies for better compression of graphics and data
  • AI tools for offloading processing from servers
As these improvements are realized, the Metaverse will begin to feel and behave like a "real world."
