Due to a significant cyberattack on August 31, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) was compelled to stop production of cars. The cyber attack caused the complete shutdown of all the company's computer systems, and without computers, there would be no car production. Factories operating in the UK, Slovakia, Brazil and India halted production, while only the factory in China stayed operational.

What Occurred

The corporation's computer systems were hit by hackers, disabling significant computer systems including:

  • Production software to build cars;
  • Engineering and design systems;
  • Management systems for new models.
These systems left the corporation unable to build any new cars, leaving them focused just on fulfiling orders of cars that had previously been built. Production may stay stopped until October 1, 2025..

Who Was Impacted

As we've mentioned earlier, the shutdown hurt the company and its people.

  • More than 33,000 JLR workers were affected.
  • Over 200,000 people in the supply chain were impacted.
  • Many small suppliers needed to close or lay off employees.
One attack impacted paycheck processing for thousands of families, creating challenges for JLR's Chief Executive Officer.

Following the company’s 'Reimagine' initiative, CEO Adrian Mardell was prepared to depart due to satisfactory profits; he is now confronted with the company’s most significant issue.

The criticism was, too, with the move to outsource IT, to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) since TCS was more cost-effective. Critics argued this made it simpler to hack JLR.

What's Next

JLR, alongside UK cyber-specialists, is assessing, with police and IT colleagues to get things moving. They will still be able to deliver produced cars, but it will take time to reset production.

In the meantime:

• Each day of closure costs millions of £.
• Wholesale suppliers are asking the government for help too.
• Brand new product launches such as the launch of the new electric Range Rover may end up being delayed as well.

My Opinion

I really like JLR cars and driving them, they are fast with great looks! However, this is how weak/fragile car manufacturers can be with technology. They attack one time and it all stops; the cars, jobs, the future.
