It seems that adding more RAM to your VPS (Virtual Private Server) can be very confusing, and I've been wondering why the price for additional RAM seems to rise while virtually everything else remains unchanged.

Why RAM Matters So Much for VPS Hosting

There's a reason for this. It's because RAM significantly impacts how a VPS operates. When a server runs out of memory, it can no longer accommodate additional users, thus making RAM more valuable than CPU or storage.

The fact is that with today's software becoming more resource-intensive, websites and applications are becoming more memory-hungry than ever. Consequently, the demand for RAM will continue to rise.

What Has Changed and What Has Not

There have been some improvements and some changes in terms of RAM manufacturing processes, but VPS Hosting costs have hardly fallen. For example, even with the increased speeds of DDR5 RAM, the cost of DDR5 RAM has dropped very little. Also, there has been some improvement in the availability of DDR5 RAM compared to the past, but VPS Hosting costs remain nearly unchanged.

Various factors contribute to what we consider the high cost of RAM today:
  • There are limits as to how much RAM you can put on a single server.
  • Over the years, the amount of memory that software uses has dramatically increased.
  • Many web hosts do not have a lot of RAM to offer.
  • When comparing a low RAM plan to other plans, you will find that performance is generally very poor.

What Is the Method of Hosting Providers for Setting VPS Pricing?

Many hosting companies have combined CPU and RAM to determine their VPS pricing. In some cases, they have provided "Optimized" plans that are defined as bundles, while many VPS providers also have VPS packages available at a low price point. However, you will usually get far less than a satisfactory level of performance from them.

Through my own experience, paying slightly higher for enough RAM will provide a long term solution. If your website was built with too short a memory capacity RAM wise, you will either experience downs or slow load time.

So, What Does This Mean for You in 2026?

While you will not see RAM prices drop significantly due to government regulation, the VPS pricing structure in 2026 will probably remain the same and will not be significantly different.

In summary:

  • You should purchase RAM based on your present needs only.
  • You should not purchase a VPS package with a very low amount of RAM.
  • You should increase your RAM as your website increases.

Final Thoughts

So, is RAM so expensive today? Yes, but by making the correct choices for VPS server purchases in 2026, you will get a good value. Don't expect a fast VPS from a VPS package that has an extremely low amount of RAM.
