Have you ever experienced that feeling of uncertainty when your backup's integrity comes into question, and you are not particularly sure if it will rightfully protect your data when you needed to restore it the most? I have. When I read about Vinchin Backup & Recovery V9.0, I was feeling a little relieved thinking to myself "Finally, some updates that make sense!".

This version has a stronger emphasis on data protection, speed of recovery, and compatibility and support for other related systems β€” the stuff we care about. Therefore, if you are an administrator of servers, containers, or if you just play around with backups for a hobby - this article is for you.

What’s New in Vinchin Backup/Recovery V.9.0

1. Stronger Security & Backup Checking

One of the more interesting features that I noticed, is the way it checks your backup source files on its own. It does this through a prefix called a checksum that verifies your backup files are not corrupted or missing chunks of data. If it doesn't like something about a file, it takes the point from the backup as bad before you even have a chance to think about using it.

In addition to your backup confirmation process, Vinchin now has an automatic AV scanning option built into it. Kaspersky can do a sweep for malicious files or other forms of nefarious computer code during the restoration process of many of the backup source files. So even if you made a mistake to begin with, you are about to, or will bring a virus back when recovering dependent code. Very clever right?

2. Compatibility with Various Systems - Including Containers

With this version, life is easier if you are running multiple virtual machines (VM), physical servers with backups or virtualization, or containers or a combination of those systems. It supports any-to-any migration, i.e. all forms of V2V, P2V, and C2V: There is no need to add new tools in the system to manage the migration of data between VM, physical, or containers.

And for people who will be running Kubernetes, Vinchin has enabled container backup functionality with its built-in tools. Users can backup or restore entire clusters, applications, or single volumes. Users can even run scripts before and after the backup to ensure consistency.

3. Faster and Safer Recovery

No one wants to be sitting and waiting a long time to get systems up and running again when it's down. Vinchin V9.0 can eliminate waiting time by implementing backup clusters. If you had one server/host that went down, another server/host can take on the instance. Doing this eliminates the single point of failure.

The system also offers automatic retry for failing jobs so you’re not forced to manually restart everything. The new emergency recovery feature even allows you to spin up systems in a built-in test lab if your primary setup goes offline. Pretty cool, right?

Why All This is Important

I have had backups that looked correct, but then failed to work when I attempted to restore them, and that was a nightmare. That's why I really like nice new integrity checks and virus scans in all of this. They both help assure your backups are truly working when needed.

In addition to the virus scans and integrity checks, having the ability to migrate to different systems has saved heaps of time. No more complicated tools or bizarre steps. The ability to configure a cluster just means one less thing to worry about during downtime.

Who Should Try It

Whomever manages:

β€’ Multiple servers or VMs
β€’ Containers or mixed environments
β€’ Systems which cannot sustain downtime

This update would be ideal for. If you are merely backing up a personal computer, the update may be beyond what you require. However, for IT teams or those with business and data production responsibilities, this update is a solid next step for your organization.
