Imagine your preferred car brand stops making cars because hackers infiltrated its system. This actually happened to Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). The production lines ceased, suppliers were unable to deliver, and employees feared losing their jobs. In response to the problem, the UK government offered a £1.5 billion loan guarantee to Jaguar Land Rover. This defintiely provides a significant level of comfort!

How the loan guarantee works

The government is not providing JLR with cash directly. Instead, the government is guaranteeing a loan with a bank. To sparaphrase; The government is essentially saying if JLR cannot repay the loan, we (the government) will. So, that's a little bit easier for JLR to process in terms of borrowing and paying bills.

The loan duration is five years, which will now allow JLR to:

• Pay vendors who were waiting for payment
• Restart factories, and begin production
• Protect jobs across regions such as West Midlands and Merseyside

Importance

It is more than just cars. JLR is a key contributor to the UK car industry, employing b and supporting 120,000 additional jobs through its supplier base. When hackers hit, families, small businesses, and the economy are severely impacted.

At the time of the attack, JLR did not even have cyber insurance coverage. Awkward timing?

However, who is the culprit?

A hacker group known as "Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters" took responsibility for the cyber attack and published screenshots taken from JLR's internal systems that they stole. They claimed affiliation with well-known hacking groups, Scattered Spider, Lapsus$, and ShinyHunters. The group utilized ransomware to lock JLR's systems and stop their ability to manufacture vehicles.

In my opinion

Let me be clear, this demonstrates the severity of cyberattacks, as attackers can halt huge companies and affect thousands of employees. Have you ever had the thought, somewhere in the world, there is someone typing away at a keyboard, and that person formally stopped thousands of cars from being made? Fascinating!

Future Steps

On the plus side, JLR has returned to making vehicles. With the government guarantee for JLR, they will be able to pay their bills and continue to employ its workers. Overall, this is a positive story and a positive lesson that even large corporations need to invest in meaningful cyber security.

Just to recap, the UK's government £1.5 billion loan guarantee for the car manufacturing company is not just about having access to cash, but continues to support their employees, protect jobs, support their suppliers, and support a critical piece of the UK economy.
