Let's face it - data breaches often sound boring. But that's not the case for what happened in 2025. While some events were strange and others shocking—the impact of various breaches reached millions of individuals. Have you considered how quickly your info might get out without your knowledge? This has happened to all of us this year.

Weirdest and Most Shocking Data Breach Events in 2025

Tea Dating App Incident

You might feel safe sharing your identification (ID) with a dating application. However, if I tell you that the Tea dating application left open online of around 72000 selfie photos & 72000 photo IDs. You will most likely have some bad feelings toward the application. Later on, private messages were also leaked. You may change a password at any point, but how can you change your face? Very unsettling!

Blue Shield of California's Big Error

I could not believe it! They shared medical data on close to 4.7 Million people with Google by mistake! This was due to assigned tracking tools on their site. One simple error caused a large privacy issue; allow me to ask - who has ever trusted their health record with a company such as this? Think twice about who you trust!

PowerSchool and School Data Breach

PowerSchool stores school information such as enrollment information for 60 million students and teachers that has been hacked. And this was achieved by using the stolen credentials of a school employee. The breach exposed a wide range of student information, including grades, medical information, and Social Security numbers. Additionally, the hackers were able to gain access to the information without even implementing an additional level of security (multi-factor authentication) on the administrator's account.

Breach of Gravy Analytics and Location Tracking

The breach of Gravy Analytics has made me question how much we should trust companies to collect our location data from our cellular devices. When Gravy's database was advertised publicly, it showed where people go, where they live, and where they travel each day. This level of control is too much for one company to have over so many people.

What I Learned From This Experience

The problem isn't with hackers accessing information. The problem is that companies are collecting too much data, and when it is stolen, the amount of damage done is tremendous.

As users, we must create strong passwords and activate multiple layers of security for our accounts. Data breaches will continue to increase, as they have been on the rise over the past several years. Each time there is a new breach, there is an increased likelihood that your own personal data will be compromised or stolen.
