Data Centers are multi-million dollar facilities that hold all of our
digital content.
Data Centers hold everything from bank records to government documents, photos, apps, and other digital content. If a
Data Center goes offline, it could create a nationwide emergency. I am wondering
should the government will take control of the data centers to protect its citizens.
Why Do We Care?
I always thought the companies that build
Data Centers keep our data secure. But because there have been so many breaches and attacks on data over time, I started to think, "What if a company from another country is attempting to control my data?" That sounds frightening. I would never give my password to someone who I don't know. So why would a person allow a foreign company to control their private data?
Why Some People Think Yes
There are a lot of people who feel that
data centers are
a national resource or a national asset. So, the government should be in control of them in order to provide
national security for individuals and the country.
Reasons for Nationalizing Data Centers
•
Improved Security: The government will set stringent requirements for security and will ensure that sensitive information is adhered to.
•
A Single point of accountability: People are aware of who is responsible for their data.
•
Safer during war: In times of war and emergency,
nationalized data centers are safer than private ones because private sector cares about profit not national security.
Ever consider if a
private data center that holds
military information closes: There would be total chaos.
Reasons Against Nationalizing Data Centers
- Slower Technology Development
- More Paperwork
- Taxpayer Expenses.
Let's be honest, the technology provided by government typically has slower speeds. You have likely experienced that frustration when you try to access a website and it takes an eternity to open!
The Ideal Choice: A Hybrid Approach
From my perspective, both government and business should collaborate together:
- The government should oversee highly sensitive information;
- Businesses will manage data centers in standard ways; and
- Everyone should adhere to strict security protocols.
