Have you heard about the recent security issue with n8n? If you are an n8n user or use any kind of automation tool, then this information is relevant for you. I have previously used automation tools and whenever I hear about a story like this I stop and review everything I have in place for automation. Would you consider doing the same?

What Happened With n8n?

n8n – is an automation tool that connects applications together (automates workflows). A lot of users like using n8n because it is open source and has many capabilities. Recently a major security flaw was discovered within n8n that puts a lot of servers at risk.

Here’s the basics:

The problem has to do with how n8n processes expressions in workflows. If any user has valid login credentials (even minimal access), then he/she can execute malicious code into n8n, which allows an attacker access to that server.

Scary to think about, huh?

Why Does That Matter?

It's surprising to think that anyone can easily perform this type of attack with minimal skills. All they need just a login that can be gained through a weak password or phishing attacks. It is a disturbing fact that self-hosted n8n servers have now become a target for cyber criminals almost immediately.

What You Should Do

The good news is that n8n has already resolved the issue in newer versions of the software. By taking action quickly, you can enhance your security.

From my perspective, what I suggest doing is as follows:
  • Upgrade to the latest version of n8n immediately
  • Limit access to editing or creating workflows
  • Secure your n8n server and monitor your logs on a continuous basis
Remember that even the most trusted tool has flaws. There's a reason you lock your doors. You can't take security for granted just because you trust the neighbourhood where you live.

If you're an n8n user right now, check which version of n8n you're currently running today, within a matter of minutes you could easily avoid an enormous headache.
