Hi. Have you heard about the recent data breach that happened at Passaic River Physicians? If you're a patient, it may affect you, so I will explain what happened in simple terms.

What Happened?

In May 2025, Passaic River Physicians, a physician practice in New Jersey, was hacked. ApolloMD, its administrative company, detected suspicious activity in its computer system on May 22. The hackers accessed the data between May 22–23.

A ransomware group called Qilin claimed they've done it. They have not released any details about how many patients were affected, but it sounds like personal and medical information was exposed.

Who Is Affected and What Information is Stolen?

If you were treated as a patient, your information may have been compromised. This includes:

  • Your name, date of birth, address
  • Medical information related to your diagnosis, treatment, and doctor visits
  • Health insurance information
  • Social Security number
In other words, both your personal information and your health information were compromised.

ApolloMD notified patients about the incident on September 17, 2025 and posted a notice on its website.

What Should You Do?

If your information has been compromised, here's what I'd recommend doing:

  • Enroll in the free credit monitoring service offered by ApolloMD
  • Review your bank and credit card accounts for any fraudulent charges
  • Place a fraud alert or request your free credit report from one of the major credit bureaus
  • Consult with an attorney or see if you qualify for a class-action lawsuit
These actions help to protect your financial and identity security.

Significance of this Breach

The breach illustrates a few things:

  • Health information is very sensitive. It is able to be hacked and potentially lead to the theft of your identity or insurance fraud.
  • Companies who manage medical records for doctors can be a weak point. Even if the doctor's office is secure, the intermediary company can be hacked.
  • Delayed notification allows hackers to utilize your information for longer.
Have you ever considered how safe your medical information really is? This breach shows even "safe" places can be hacked.

My Advice

If I have been negatively affected I would:

1) Immediately enroll in credit monitoring,
2) Watch my banks and credit accounts closely,
3) Look back at old medical bills for errors of strange charges,
4) Attempt to get in a class action law suit.

It’s frustrating we have to be cautious like this, but that’s the reality today.

In Closing

The Passaic River Physicians data breach reminds us that your health care information and personal information has been compromised. If you received a notice, please heed it with some consideration. Protect yourself now and yes you may be entitled to at least some legal help if your information was compromised.
