Have you ever attempted to set up a server and thought you needed a computer science degree just to get WordPress up and running? I know that I have. This is where one-click stacks come in, which promises `ready to use, no stress'. So, do we do a one-click stack or do we need to use a custom server set up, like the ones that satisfy our every requirement, and have everything perfect? Let's discuss.

Why One-Click Stacks Are Popular

I do use one-click stacks a lot, especially when I'm checking out new apps. The biggest advantage is speed, in just a few clicks you have:

  • A web server set up ready to use
  • A database set up and configured
  • The programming language installed
You can forget wrestling with complex configurations of server files, or worrying if you have every tool installed. In a small project, or just testing something quickly, they can be incredible.

But, this goes back to the limitation of one-click stacks. It is not just any configuration that you want to change. If you need a special php extension that does not come out of the box with the stack you are stuck and left to resolve your issue another way. That can be very frustrating at times.

Why Some Enjoy Custom Solutions

Custom server solutions will take more time than one-click stacks, yet provide more control. You can choose:

• Which web server to use
• How the web server functions and its rules
• Exact versions of programming languages

I enjoy custom servers when I want a better performance or features that a one-click stack cannot provide. It’s like making a meal from scratch instead of reheating a frozen dinner—they both give you sustenance, but one is far superior.

What Do People Actually Want?

There’s a degree of dependency here; it depends on your needs. Beginners or small projects prefer one-click stacks because they are easier to use, and they are fast. Developers/advanced users tend to enjoy custom solutions because of the additional control, and the performance is generally superior.

Quick-guide:

  • Choose one-click stacks if: You want something quick and easy.
  • Choose custom solutions if: You want to control everything and/or make it faster or different.

In Conclusion

There's no singular answer. I utilize both, based on the project. One-click stacks are similar to the "fast pass," whereas custom configurations allow you the flexibility of being the chef of your server.

In the future you choose, consider, do I want to click and get started quickly, or do I spend time and make it perfect? It works either way.
