Here is something interesting that I've found: Microsoft made an announcement today that Windows Server 2025 will be the last version of Windows that supports the use of WINS. So if your organization is still utilizing WINS within its network then you should be aware of this . . .
I suppose you can justify keeping WINS alive as a "just in case" but when you look at all the uses and applications of modern networks WINS does not belong any longer.
To migrate to DNS, use one of the following methods:
Additionally, Microsoft clearly states that you should not rely on hosts files for scaling purposes – they will lead to future regrets.
What’s Going On?
On September 25, 2021, Microsoft announced that Windows Server 2025 will be the last version which support WINS (Windows Internet Naming Service) server role, WINS management tool and WINS scripts or APIs. This means that once you upgrade to the next version of Server you will no longer be able to use WINS or any related products, services or interfaces from Microsoft. Why Is Microsoft Removing Wins?
For several important reasons, WINS has become out-dated and no longer serves any purpose for organizations using today's technology for networking and system operations. The following are some of these reasons:- DNS (Domain Name Service) is a far better solution for professionals using modern networking solutions than WINS for traditional networks.
- Compared to WINS, DNS is much more secure with additional support provided by services like DNSSEC (Domain Name Security Extensions).
- Active Directory (AD), one of the most common platforms used by organizations today uses DNS for many of its functions.
I suppose you can justify keeping WINS alive as a "just in case" but when you look at all the uses and applications of modern networks WINS does not belong any longer.
What Should You Do Next?
If your network is still running WINS, now is the time to begin taking action. Microsoft advises checking all dependencies on NetBIOS/WINS.To migrate to DNS, use one of the following methods:
- Conditional Forwarders
- Split-brain DNS
- DNS Search Suffix Lists
Additionally, Microsoft clearly states that you should not rely on hosts files for scaling purposes – they will lead to future regrets.
When Is The Deadline?
There is still time. The following timeline provides clarity:- The final version of Windows Server to offer WINS is Windows Server 2025.
- After November 14, 2034, WINS will no longer be supported.
