Have you ever received unwanted communication from a stranger that led you to think “Is this a scam?” In developing features for the social media apps WhatsApp and Messenger, Meta hopes to help. They have added new features to WhatsApp and Messenger encrypted apps to better identify scams and improve user safety.

New Scam Warnings on Messenger

Meta is testing an intelligent scam detection program on their Messenger platform. If a contact you just met sends you a suspicious message, the system provides an alert and an AI analysis of the message. The AI analysis checks for scam indicators and provides actions for you to consider taking, including the options to block or report the contact.

The new scam detection feature is enabled by default but can be turned off in Privacy & Safety settings. The company wants users to have knowledge of common scams so that they do not become victims. Have you wondered why some people fall for phishing messages? This tool can help stop that.

WhatsApp Gets Warnings When Someone Requests To Share Your Screen

WhatsApp offers users notifications, or warnings, if someone is asking you to share your screen, while on a call. It is easy to share your screen during a call, however sharing your screen should only happen with people you trust. Many users are unaware that scammers can utilize screen-sharing features to steal your bank credentials or codes.

WhatsApp provides a safety overview after you have been added to a group. You will see group details, which include creation date, member count, and potential scam risk. If you are messaged by a stranger, WhatsApp shows some information to help you identify a suspicious contact.

Combatting Scams Everywhere

Meta has taken down a significant number of scam accounts. In 2025, Meta removed around 8 million accounts related to overseas scam centers located in countries like Laos, Cambodia, and the Philippines. Additionally, they removed 21,000 fake pages created to steal users' information when pretending to provide support. Earlier in the year, Meta partnered with OpenAI to bring down a scam center in Cambodia promoting fake likes, pyramid schemes, and various crypto scams.

Be Safe and Smart Online

These are good tools that show Meta wants to help fight scams. Alerts, AI reviews, and warnings about unknown contacts will make it tougher for scams to fool users. If a stranger messages you, remember to check the warnings, it will help you avoid a scam.

Meta's new tools are a good reminder: we must be careful. Do you want to know how tech companies are working to fight against scams? Smart tools, AI tools, and more careful attention to the scam.
