Have you ever seen a hosting plan that says "pay once, use forever" and thought, "wow, that sounds awesome!"? I have! But if I'm being honest, it can get complicated. Let's discuss if lifetime hosting is a good buying decision or just scheme to make some money.

What Is Lifetime Hosting?

Lifetime hosting is when you pay a one-time fee and get your website hosted forever. It's not a monthly bill, or yearly fee, it's just one payment. Sounds amazing, right?

But here's the confusion: not all plans are created equal. Some of them have limitations, have slow servers, and/or have non-existent customer support. I learned that the hard way on a "lifetime" plan I purchased when I received no more assistance after a few years.

Advantages of Lifetime Hosting

There are definitely some definite advantages:

• Pay once, no monthly fees or yearly fees.
• Easy to plan, you know exactly what you spend.
• Good for small sites – Blogs or small projects can be really great.

I use a lifetime plan for my blog, and it has been just fine for me. I wasn't really sure at $49 what the benefit was but how much I paid is worth it to have "peace" of mind. In my opinion, there are enough good things about Lifetime Hosting that it is worth the exploration.

The Disadvantages of Lifetime Hosting

However, there are a few disadvantages:

The company may cease operations - If they go out of business, - bye bye your website.

I personally lost downtime once when my hosting company ceased operations.

Lesson learned: check out the host's reputation first.

Who should be using lifetime hosting?

Consider the following questions:

• Are you going to grow your site? Bigger growing websites may demand a better host.
• Do you want quick support? Some won’t bother in a short period of time.
• Are you okay with risk? Lifetime hosting is cheaper, but it’s not always good.

My Take

Based on my experiences, I think lifetime hosting is fine for small or hobby sites. Serious business websites should used regular hosting - it may cost more money up front, but your site is safer.

Before you buy, weigh the money savings against the risk. And, if you like, I can share some actual experiences with both good and bad lifetime hosting options - I may save you a headache.
