Have you ever gazed around your home and wondered, "Everything is smart these days; even my fridge is smart!" I have thought that many times. Smart devices can bring joy to our daily lives, and at the same time, they can be problematic if you don't adequately protect your devices. Let's discuss some ways to protect your
IoT devices reliably while making your life easy.
Why IoT Security Matters
Many years ago, I bought a cheap smart lightbulb. It would work, but it would act funky and disconnect. I remember thinking, "If someone can hack a lightbulb, then what about a smart oven or smart water heater?"
IoT security protects:
- Devices in smart homes
- Devices in medical applications
- Connected vehicles
- Devices in manufacturing
At the end of the day, we all want to protect our information and devices, right?
How Hackers Get Into IoT Devices
Common Vulnerabilities
Hackers have an affinity for IoT devices that normally have:
- A vulnerability because soft or default credentials are used
- Outdated operating-stystem, firmware, or application updates
- No or limited encryption support
- Open ports or misconfigured settings
If your smart light bulb is still on
"admin123," switch it as soon as you can.
Simple Ways to Improve the Security of Your IoT Devices
You don't need to be in the tech sector to use these simple tips that will help tighten the security of your
IoT device.
1. Ensure Your Passwords Are Strong
One of the easiest safety measures against hackers is to ensure your passwords are strong.
2. Always Keep Your Devices Updated
Updates are designed to
fix security issues. Don't ignore them. Update your devices.
3. Use a Dedicated Wi-Fi Network For IoT Devices
I use "
guest Wi-Fi" only for
my IoT devices. That way, if I get hacked, the devices stay constrained to the guest network. You may want to do this as well.
4. Set Up Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
Many devices offer two-factor authentication. If you can enable it, do so. It strengthens the security of the devices and/or the apps that access your devices.
You Might Even Consider Some Additional Tools
If you want to enhance safety you may even consider:
- Firewalls
- App to monitor your devices
- Routers with security features
These tools do provide additional visibility over your networks and assist to warn you when something looks suspicious
In Closing
IoT devices are innovative and certainly make our lives easier, but don't forget about security. Being cautious and taking safety precautions is easy. By updating your devices, using strong passwords, and being responsible for your settings, you can feel safe.
