Brands don’t typically change their name or look for no reason whatsoever. It’s typically because of two key reasons: Have you ever opened your
hosting account and thought it looked different because it had a new name, logo, or even dashboard? Strange isn’t, but it happens. Don’t worry though. You’re just seeing the shift of a
hosting platform from one brand to a new brand.
Why Do Hosting Brands Change?
Businesses don’t change names or looks for the sake of having fun, they do this because of:
•
Merger or buyout - One business acquires a business and it merges into the other.
•
Better technology - The brands upgrade their platform and come out with a new identity.
For instance, I experienced this with one of my
VPS providers. At first I thought I typed a wrong login. But they just rebranded to new name.
The Positive Effects of Hosting Brand Change
So, what are the
benefits of changes in hosting platforms?
• Faster servers along with improved uptime
• More support staff available to help with issues
• Other features, such as free
CDN,
backups, or, better
dashboards
Just like when, the place you usually eat at gives you free fries with your burger - sweet, right?
The Negative Effects
However, the reality is the change often will include less than good effects too:
• Prices that shock you.
• New policies or limits you dislike.
• Time you spent migrating and wasted on trying to figure things out.
I had to explain this to a client once, and let me tell you, it was a challenge!
What you Can do About it
If your host brand is changing, here are some things to do:
- Read their emails - They will tell you what changes.
- Look to see if you get any new features - You might be getting tools that are better than what you had before.
- Look at other hosts - If you hate it, move your site.
- Always back up - Always keep a backup of your files and databases.
Closing Thought
While I often find it fascinating to observe how
hosting brands develop and change as I follow them, at times it seems a bit chaotic. At other times they provide us with some really cool features that I didn't expect to see and I enjoy following it. If you're following and not stagnant, change can be a good thing.
So, the next time your
hosting brand changes, just breathe. Ask yourself: Are you experiencing an upgrade in disguise?
