Google has just published an update to
Chrome resolving an existing security vulnerability. This marks the eighth time this year that hackers have used
Chrome from a previously existing vulnerability prior to it being made public by
Google. This means that for the
year 2025 the same vulnerability used eight times before we had official notification of the vulnerability from
Google.
What does this mean for the Chrome User?
The vulnerability is referred to as
a zero-day vulnerability. In this case, because the hackers were aware of this vulnerability before
Google had the chance to patch it. The number of users that suffered from this type of exploit is staggering.
Google has released a
patch for Chrome on Windows machines,
Macs, and
Linux computers. You will likely not experience any noticeable difference after applying the patch. However, once applied, attackers will no longer be able to take advantage of this problem.
What did this problem do?
The vulnerability is based on an issue related to a component of Chrome —
LibANGLE, which is responsible for rendering the image on the web page correctly. The breakdown of this component enabled hacker(s) to formulate ways to have
Chrome utilize memory incorrectly.
A "Security Breach" can be defined as an event that poses a security threat.
It leads to:
- A Browser crashing
- A Leak of information and/or personal information
- Hiring and using Malicious software or code on your computer by malicious hackers
As you can see, visiting a
malicious website can create all three issues. I think that's pretty scary.
Why does “eight zero-days” matter?
I think that
"Eight Zero-Days" (a term used to define security vulnerabilities) means a lot of zero days present in a year. With eight security vulnerabilities, this year represents many attacks against all popular browsers like
Chrome.
Because of this, many attacks will be done against all user browsers daily. Therefore, I recommend
updating Chrome immediately as I know how quickly they move when it comes to attacks. A couple of days waiting could be life-threatening.
What to do
The most critical thing for you to do is update your
Chrome browser as soon as possible. To update your Chrome browser, open up your
Chrome browser, click on the
menu (3 lines in the upper left corner) >
link to "Help" >
"About Google Chrome" > Click on
"Update Now."
