Here’s an update on the DILG. You may have heard reports that hackers may have invaded their system; the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) now wants to investigate whether their data was breached and whether it was a serious problem. This is a big deal and a lot of people want to know what happened.

DILG (Department of the Interior and Local Government) is a government agency in the Philippines to ensure that local communities are safe, managed, and governed properly.

What Happened?

DILG says it is investigating allegations that hackers breached their data.

They also said their central systems are fine but have implemented additional security measures.

Technical groups and government cybersecurity units are working together to investigate the situation. They also said to the general public to remain calm and not believe everything they see online; which makes sense? Fake news travels fast.

How Big Is This Breach?

An IT expert, Art Samurai, says the hackers may have stolen around 400 GB of DILG’s data. That’s a staggering amount of data.

Some reports also mention the breach may involve over 40 million records, including logs and user information. If this is true, it may mean personal information for many individuals may be disclosed.

Who Is looking Into This?

The DILG is not looking into this on its own, but will be working with:
  • CICC (Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center)
  • PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group
Which is good for the DILG. The DILG also stated they want to confirm everything up front, before they disclose any more information. They stated they also want to make sure people do not panic for the wrong reasons.

Why Should We Care?

The issue has relevance because potentially millions of Filipinos could have their personal data exposed. People rely on government offices to protect their international statistical and personal data. If a breach did happen, then that rely is shaken.

There are also earlier reports of an alleged data leak of approximately 22 GB of internal data. So it raises additional concern to the alleged breach.

My Opinion

If I was in their position, I would want immediate clarity and answers. Government data systems are a target for hacks and breaches, so any security protocols or plans are paramount.

I just hope DILG is completely honest and transparent in the findings of the investigation.

Final Thoughts

DILG is now investigating this alleged hack and is currently getting the support of cybersecurity teams to assist in their efforts. There is still a lot we don't know, but further updates will be forthcoming.

Let's hope that they remedy and fix the actual situation but also make sure that their systems are secure for everyone.
