Have you ever heard of a
VPS deal that you thought was too good to be true? That was my exact thought when I found out
DediRock had a
VPS for $7 a year. Seven dollars for a VPS? I had to check it out for myself. To be honest, it is far from perfect, but for that price, it's a pretty good service.
Starting with DediRock
It was easy to set up the VPS - in a matter of a few minutes my server was set up. The control panel is simple; not messy and confounding like some
cheaper VPS services.
What I appreciated about the setup:
- VPS is set up immediately
- You have a choice of Linux or Windows
- You have easy access to your VPS, using SSH or Remote Desktop
For $7 a year, I didn't expect it to be so smooth. Can you believe that a
cheap VPS can almost feel like a
premium VPS? It genuinely does.
Performance: How Fast Is It?
The $64,000 question: does it work? It does, though your expectations should be kept in check. This is perfect for simple, small websites for testing, or light apps. I had a few small projects running without issue.
What I noticed:
β’
CPUs & RAM: Enough for small uses
β’
Network speed: Good for testing, and light uses
β’
Storage: SSD, so read/write speeds were good
Donβt try to run large apps, or apps where large amounts of traffic are coming. But for simple apps, it worked fine.
Reliability and Support
I didn't know what support would be, but
DediRock was surprising. Their support replied to you back in a few hours, and were extremely clear. This is nice as being someone using
a cheap VPS.
Wrapping Up: Should You Give it a Go?
Would I recommend DediRock's current $7/year VPS? If you know what you need to do with it, sure. It is fine for hobby projects, testing to learn
how to use a VPS, and maybe a couple simple apps. You just can't expect it to be super swift or have the highest end support.
So yes, short answer, it might be cheap, but it is still fine. So far the VPS itself is small, but very powerful given its price range. Have you ever used a cheap VPS that actually works? I can see DediRock being that VPS.
