Has there been a large-scale release of personal data that made you think, everybody will be affected"? Well, just recently, Coupang experienced the same thing. I will clarify all of these current issues for you in very simple terms.
Problems with Coupang
• In total, Coupang says 34 million accounts were compromised, which is basically everyone on Coupang.
• When these accounts were compromised, people lost their names, emails, phone numbers, home addresses, and some information regarding their orders.
• Coupang is stating that credit cards and passwords were not compromised.
• The craziest part is that the leak occurred in June, but the company did not know about it until November. That is more than five months that this information was floating around.
Why Is This Important?
Even though a password may remain intact after a leak, the possibility of losing personal data and having it abused still exists. You could be called by a random person claiming to be from "Coupang Support," and because they have your email and address, there is a possibility they could legitimately deceive you.
What Needs To Be Improved
Coupang has to figure out who at Coupang has access to client information and secure that access as much as possible. They must inform clients quickly when strange activity occurs.
If you are a Coupang client, I would advise to be vigilant. Do not click on any unexpected links or accept calls that pretend to be from Coupang. If you are not confident Coupang is safe to use right now, you may stop using it until it is.
My thoughts
Large businesses like Coupang have an obligation to care for their clients. They are responsible for what happens to a large number of individuals through an error made by Coupang. They have a moral obligation to protect their clients better and provide tangible means to help clients be safer.
What is your opinion? Do you still have confidence in Coupang, or do you prefer to wait until they can demonstrate they have made changes?
