You likely have heard about IPv6 for several years now without having experienced it for real. But now ColoCrossing has formally supported IPv6 in all of their hosting services! This is excellent news, but of course many people still ask, why so long?
Why So Long?
IPv6 isn't something you turn on at the flick of a switch. It is a very large migration of how the internet works. ColoCrossing had a lot of services to update before it was even safe to deploy. They had to:
• Replace old network devices, including routers and switches.
• Reconfigure their firewalls and DDoS systems to ensure both IPv4 and IPv6 were working simultaneously.
• Carefully test all systems to make sure they did not break websites and apps when changes were made.
It is like changing all the electrical wiring in your house while still living there - slow and risky, but worth it in the end.
The Importance of IPv6
So, what’s the big deal with IPv6? Global IPv4 addresses have been running out for quite some time now, the old system, IPv6 gives us a ton of new addresses for everyone and everything online.
So what does that mean for customers?
• Faster and better, more stable connections.
• Better performance for global users.
• Mismanagements of IPv4 IPv6 should mean, we will never run out of IP addresses.
If you have ever needed to ask your host for just one more IP, you absolutely know how great this is going to be.
Better Late Than Broken
Sure, some did start IPv6 with ColoCrossing. But we wanted to do it right. We didn’t want to realize some critical aspect of the project too late. We had to rule out anything that could crash entire networks, including poor planning, and quality of service down time for their users' customers. Seriously, I don't think there is a rush job at the expense of the customer. Quality always trumps velocity/quick.
What Comes Next
At this juncture in the evolution of IPv6 services, ColoCrossing is well equipped for the next generation of the Internet! With this upgrade we can provide higher speeds, generally improved reliability, and less connectivity trouble for every client.
So yes, this has been a long time coming, and yes... it was worth it. IPv6 is finally here... time to let their hosting customers experience for themselves!
