The WHMCS license server went down, and many users wrote on forums and other platforms that they were unable to access their WHMCS administrator area.

Many users claimed that they were impacted by this event. Finally, WHMCS-John joined the discussion and confirmed on WebHostingTalk:
on 2nd September, they experienced a high volume of traffic directed at their licensing infrastructure, which resulted in a degraded ability for the WHMCS software to perform the 'call home' required periodically as part of normal license enforcement and when an installation's domain, IP, or directory changes.

What issues can arise if the WHMCS license system goes down?
  • You won't be able to access the administrator area.
  • Some WHMCS addons might not function properly.
  • You won't be able to change the IP address.
  • You also won't be able to change the domain or directory.

As per WHMCS official documentation, WHMCS generates a local key cache for the license, which periodically re-checks the license. During this time, if the license server is down, it will show your license as invalid. But if the license has already been checked, it won't affect your WHMCS installation.

This doesn't happen to everyone; only a few users are impacted.

When I visited the WHMCS status page, I saw an SSL error, and the uptime record showed only 88% uptime for the WHMCS licensing server. Everything is fine now.
