You may be thinking to yourself that "proxy server" sounds harmless? It hides your IP address, gives you privacy, and forces you to block websites. But they can in fact be hacked. Let me explain this simply.

What is a Proxy Server?

A proxy server is simply a third-party server. When you visit a website, your request goes to the proxy first. The proxy makes the request to the website, and the website only sees the proxy IP address.

It sounds secure right? The hard truth is a proxy is only secure if it's set up correctly and is maintained correctly.

3 ways Hackers can get into Proxies

A proxy is just a computer like any other and hacks will find an easy way in if the proxy has weakness in its security. As usual, hackers want it to be easy.

Here are some common mistakes:

Weak passwords -
This is simple.

Old software - You can imagine how many bugs developers put in their software to be used later by hackers.

No encryption (HTTPS) - Your data can be stolen in plain sight.

Free public proxy - Way too many users and therefore easy to find and hack by hackers.

Have you experience a free public proxy and did not feel safe? That is usually the answer.

My experience

I tried a free public proxy one day - mainly and simply because it was a test. It was slow and while I was testing I kept saying to myself - who runs this? The owner can see all users' browsing. It was enough to make me conscious to never use a free public proxy again. From this day forward, I would always pay a little money to have peace of mind.

Are all proxies dangerous?

No, paid proxies and business proxies are far more secure than others. These tend to come with encryption, inherit strong passwords, and get updated frequently.

But remember, no one thing is 100% safe from being hacked online! So, what do I always do?

• Use a VPN wherever possible
• Choose good proxy providers that I trust
• Stay away from free proxies that seem "too good to be true"

Final thoughts?

So, can proxy servers be hacked? Yes, if they are weak, old, or free. A paid proxy may offer some protection, while a free proxy may expose your data.

Think of it like a door lock. Would you prefer a cheap rusty lock, or a strong one that ensures that you are protected?
